Transformers 2 disappointment Fallen

I waited a few weeks to write this post about Transformers The Revenge of The Fallen, not because I wanted to take me by the first impression and the heat of the moment of release.
After viewing the film carefully can give my personal opinion and is a real disappointment.
After the premiere of the first 2 years we expect many to judge the work of Michael Bay and is frankly disappointing, especially for the Fan Boys in the series suffered in the flesh of each delivery as a football fan when you get a Own your favorite team.

The Transformers were felt unconditional disagreed with the film starting from the beginning and the sequel did not expect. Many negative reviews not only from critics but fans of the show.
I suppose that if you're reading this article you are a supporter of and saw the Transformers movie, you can be an average person who went to film the movie and found by chance, a person who took their children to see the film, or a FanBoy Transformers I had hoped to see a decent film Transformers. If you're in the latter case, you will be interested as follows (there may be spoilers).

Transformers Series
Transformers began as an animated series that was designed to sell toys from Takara. But it was so successful that the number exceeded the expectations of the company's toy and started to become a cult series. After several seasons of TV and some animated films, a consolidated Transformers "universe" itself. The universe than the millions of fans wanted to see reflected on the big screen.

Transformers the Movie
Following the trend of the past comics to movies, had to reach the technological advances needed for Transformers could be carried out in a film. But this too came the great vices of Hollywood production companies to which they were interested mainly the benefits they could provide the franchise.

Everyone knows and is not news that Transformers The Movie and the film was a box office success and this also led to the sequel. A second part that has the same lines of the first, operated by director Michael Bay with a talent for explosions, easy dialogues, humor procaz and cheap psychology. Who made his own in the first part and unfortunately for everyone in the second also, as a mercenary in Hollywood, he was a Michael Bay directed a film for all audiences (PG), to make people laugh with a simple script (comic site) with the ultimate in special effects and explosions, which is not dense (although by the time it is), and leave the way open for the further production money with third party.

Transformers Revenge of the fallen
The film has already been much written is enough to see some revisions to notice their shortcomings and bugs.
The idea: it is interesting to analyze the film as a product, like a Blockbuster, a package that we sell for use as the junk food and that goes against the spirit of Transformers.
I think consumerism is so ingrained in the country's north and realize that, but the product Transformers (series produced in cooperation US-Japanese-Canadian) is universal and what is being done with the films is a lack of respect to the series.

A global mode may be necessary to a creative process and "evolution time" to reach a Transformers movie with the ingredients necessary to make it a real tribute to the original series, to find a true leader, a production company that has no meanness to make money as a place with the film and a good script.

Transformers do not need all this paraphernalia often unnecessary special effects, fights and battles ridiculous melee, characters out of context and without soul, eccentric art technology, advocating violence, extremism and extermination.

Transformers it was born as a series of toys, but it was much further by creating a symbolic universe with characters of human grandeur, heroes like Optimus PRIME which has the power to destroy a planet but chooses otherwise. Beings with superior technology that can travel through time and space but live as simply as possible to learn the primitive human.

These simple ideas of the series had no place in a film to impress and pretend it is not.

What you missed Transformers Revenge of the Fallen?

To begin with, as mentioned before a "good director", making a comparison with another successful comic brought to the big screen: Batman had the good fortune to be directed by Tim Burton in his first delivery, and many thought at the time that Batman was too dark and pretentious, but it took three sequels to demonstrate that the initial two films that Burton was more successful. And Joel Schumacher had to be responsible for trashing the latest Batman for Christopher Nolan to appear and make a clean slate with the brilliant Batman Begins and Batman Dark Night.

A good script, the backbone of any film is the script, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci fell short and never seem to not be present in the third. It seems that Michael Bay can only work with scripts cumbersome and meaningless, until you can come to believe that a good script will end its magic of special effects. Making the odious comparison again with the last Batman movie Dark Night, the script is everything (screenplay by the brothers Nolan, a part of the excellent interpretation of Heath Ledger), one day we will get to be proud of a Transformers movie that has nominees for the awards film world and fans of Batman are.

In the first film introduced us almost via rectal, papanatas the idea of the "spark of life", and the last legend of "Prime", the brain child ideas can come out of context so much material there that operate in the original series?.

And finally for not boring, being faithful to the Transformers universe, which is so rich and varied, with many ideas and innovations that should not cost you a good writer to assemble a decent story. The errors were taken to Bay Transformers Universe characters to treat as some inanimate puppets, Arcee and Devastator were mere "bluff" that made no dialogue, nor had more reason for saying that we were part of a film by Michael Bay.

It will be a little difficult to expect something better in the next installment of Transformers, maybe in a cycle like the Batman movie in the eighth find something good, but we must not falter and we will go ... Transform and rollout! ...

LaBeouf is recovering from hand surgery

Despite everything TF2 will continue filming, LeBeouf is recovering from hand surgery and will return to the set within a month, his publicist said.

A DreamWorks insider said there was no work stoppage on "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" - a follow-up to last year's global box office hit - but added that rescheduling has proven to be a logistical headache.
Scenes featuring co-star Josh Duhamel had to be moved to this week to work around LaBeouf's absence. Another person familiar with the situation said, "Everyone had to adjust their schedule."

Despite DreamWorks' insistence that shooting was not halted, another source close to the project said at least two days of filming were lost on the big-budget tentpole.

Shia LaBeouf involved in a road collision

LaBeouf was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after his truck flipped across a road and collided with another vehicle in Hollywood on Sunday.

The moviemaker Michael Bay has confirmed LaBeouf's injury has cost the movie some set-backs. Bay adds, "I spoke to him yesterday in the hospital. His two fingers are pretty mashed, but we're figuring out a way to shoot around it, kind of write it in the story."

The Transformers' Bumblebee showed up on the CES show floor this year, though we have to say he was more than a little worse for wear.

Beginning which covered how Megatron, Bumblebee and others arrived on Earth. Its uses the comic series, digital animation, and voice over to tell the story. Voice work is supplied by Peter Cullen (Optimus), Frank Welker (Megatron) and Mark Ryan (Bumblebee) and even Kevin Dunn (Sam's dad) among others. Overall not bad at all. Lot better then was expecting to be honest. Nice to hear the orginial voice of Megatron once again in new material.

Hasbro Inc., the second largest toy manufacturer in the world, announced Monday an increase in its profits for the third quarter, thanks to sales of its Playskool toys and the continued demand for products linked to the film "Transformers."

The producer of Nerf balls and the board game Monopoly reported that its quarterly earnings rose to $ 161.6 million, or 95 cents per share, compared with $ 99.6 million, or 58 cents per title, in the same period last year.

Optimus Prime Peterbilt replica hits eBay

The seller converted a 1994 Peterbilt into Hollywood's version of Optimus, complete with blue and red flame paint job, dozens of chrome switches, and a 17-inch entertainment system floating above the bunk in the back (and yes, the bunk has those Transformer sheets you had when you were 10 years old.)

Transformers Special Edition Extras Review

The DVD has arrived and the question isn't to buy or not to buy but which to buy, the 1 disc standard edition or the 2-disc Special Collector's Edition. Then its if buy the 2-disc edition, what exclusive to go for. I went with the steel case. I can't afford to buy all the exclusives so instead will just review the extras on the DVDs (not the HD-DVD).

The first disc for both versions are identical with commentary from Michael Bay. The second disc is the extra disc that gets into the details on how the movie was made and is what costs the extra $8-9 you may have to spend to get it. The question is one of worth. Is it worth that extra bit of money? That's subjective but it depends on how much you like about the process of filmmaker and the behind the scenes stuff. If you don't care then probably not worth the extra money. If you do though, it becomes a question of how good is the extras. After all, most of the time the extras are just recycled press material that was already but out on HBO, Extra, and so forth with everyone breaking an arm patting themselves and each other on the back for making such a great move with some deleted scenes thrown in. That's the normal scenario. The best behind the scenes material ever assembled was for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy but that sadly didn't become the model for extras that is should have been. So the question is where does Transformers fall in this scale?

Disc One
Michael Bay Commentary
Informative commentary that covers some ground the disc two covers but most of it is new stories and behind the scenes information. Tells stories on the animators and how their styles helped with the Transformers, stories about the actors and working with ILM and Digital Domain to pull off the effects. There are silences during the commentary that had me wondering if it had cut off but they where mostly brief. Mostly didn't like the silences because get feeling their was gobs of information that could have been conveyed about the scene or what have you during that silence. Overall good director commentary.

Disc Two
Our World (49:20)
The Story Sparks (8:33)
Covers the origins of the storyline idea of the film with interviews from those involved in the movies production. Some of the information is repeat of the usual press stories told during the movie promotion such as why Bay decided to do the movie. This section is interspersed with Transformers images, input from Hasbro, and fantastic concept artwork for the film and from Hasbro. Lots of interviews, lots of set footage. The term "Bay-hem" gets coined. Bit about the intensity of Bay but apparently it effects the set in a good way not bad.

Human Allies (13:11)
Covers the actors in the human roles of the movies with interviews, set footage, and so forth. Also gets into the details of why some people where cast in various roles with audition footage. Don't know why but Megan Fox in the audition looked much better then post movie Megan Fox. Love Rachael Taylor's accent. Also shows some bits of the Air Force training that Josh Dumahel did to prepare for the role. Back patting occurred (contractually obligated I think when involves actors), but the deleted scenes, outtakes, and so forth work so not to bad.

I Fight Giant Robots (14:00)
The military's involvement in the film is covered here. Shows some of the military training the actors went through, equipment, and behind scenes footage when filming the military related scenes. Could call this the "Boys and their Toys" section of the extras. Also covers some of the practical shooting done for the Los Angeles sequence with the actors and things going boom from to be inserted later Transformers. Pretty informative and lots of booms and toys are on display.

Battleground (13:36)
Covers the locations chosen for the film, the logistics involved in on location shooting, and the work involved in prepping the sites for filming. Some of the set construction and use is also covered in this section. An element of danger is involved, especially when it comes to "man-piss". Another good section, dry at times, but to be expected.

Their War (65:11)
Rise of the Robots (13:40)
This section covers a lot of territory. Its a Transformers history 101, bit about the Transfans, screen tests for the Transformers, explanations on why changes where made from G1 to the movie design including voice casting decisions with Optimus and Megatron. The argument for why not Frank Welker is covered here (comes down the voice didn't fit with the design and tone). As a Transfan, this was a little walk down nostalgia lane, but this section can be appreciated by both new and old fans.

Autobots Roll Out (20:00)
The whys, whats, and hows of the Autobots for the movie. A profile on each car used for each character and the customizations (some extreme) that was done to each. This is the section that explains why the changes where made from the G1 model to the movie model, many of which made since from a technical perspective. Also get to see other vehicles built (and destroyed) for the film and the various vehicle related stunts that were performed. One of the better sections on this disc.

Decepticons Strike (14:33)
Like the previous section, this one covers all the Decepticons. Goes over each of the military vehicles used for the film, be it as Transformers or for other scenes. Also covers the filming of them and the technical details of shooting with the military. Nothing about shooting on the USS Shoup though (the navel vessel at the end). Decent but not as much information as would have liked.

Inside The Allspark (16:58)
This section is about inserting the Transformers in the film from the filming of them with pole place holders to building them in the computer, animating them and inserting them into the film photo-realistically. All this is covered with interviews, test footage and CGI work. This was my geek out section. I find it fascinating to see how the imagination is made real.

More Than Meets The Eye
From Script To Sand: The Skorponok Desert Attack (8:52)
The title says it all. Takes the attack sequence and covers all aspects of the sequence from Skorponoks design, to locations, filming, CGI, and so forth. Its a good breakdown of a scene from concept to finished product.

Concepts (2:12)
A montage of images, concept designs, artwork, and ideas that where created for the film put together with the score for the film. This section is frankly genius. Most of the time this section is the picture section where you have to keep pumping the next button on your controller. Usually, because its such a pain, its a section I skip over. Here though, especially with nice edition of the score, makes for a short but enjoyable viewing of some excellent artwork. Other DVD creators need to copy this and make it a standard.

Trailers
Its the three theatrical trailers for the film, not the TV trailers.

The sections all do have a "Play All" option, something you don't appreciate until watch a DVD extras that don't have it. Why its not an automatic standard on all DVDs is beyond me. Also should mention that the menu animations are excellent.

Overall, the extra are entertaining and provide some decent information. The editing is good, the information conveyed clearly and well. Its a pretty much a by the books behind the scenes guide like most others seen on DVDs over the years. I would only spin the extra money if you are genuinely curious about the behind the scenes stuff. If you are looking for a film school detailed "how they do that" knowledge, your not going to find that here as just a surface skim on how Transformers was made. If it hadn't been Transformers I would have passed as rarely the extras provided worth the extra $10 or so the studios are now demanding (but use not to). As a Transfan though, the two hours of Transformers goodness made it worth the extra cost.

Industrial Light & Magic animators push the limits of computer animation technology to create lifelike shape-shifters in the Transformers movie

It is unlikely that this year's Oscar ceremony will include an award for best animated actor in a film. But that has not stopped movie companies from pushing the boundaries of animation to make their synthetic characters seem as real as possible—even if those characters happen to be shape-shifting megaton robots, as in last summer's Transformers special effects extravaganza.

The prospect of turning a lineup of toy action figures into a live-action film that kids would want to see (and their parents would want to take them to) was daunting, admits Industrial Light & Magic's (ILM) Scott Benza, the animation supervisor for Transformers. He adds, "We all scratched our heads," when we first heard about the project.

In November 2005 Transformers director Michael Bay and a team of designers provided Benza with 3-D computer images of the animated characters that Benza and more than 30 animators would eventually bring to life. These "animatics," or rough animations for the film, tell the movie's story, but they do not have any clearly defined style of movement.

"My job was to bring character to these computer animations," says Benza, who previously worked with Bay on 2005's The Island and Pearl Harbor in 2001. Indeed, animators are tasked with bringing computer-animated characters to life, particularly those with key "acting" roles. Lead animators work closely with directors to ensure they get the best performances out of their animated characters.

Even though he has more than a dozen films to his credit, including work on the 2003 film version of The Hulk that garnered him nominations for two awards from the Visual Effects Society, Benza says it was a challenge to create highly athletic performances from bulky, animated characters that appeared to be the size of small buildings and weigh several tons. "In some moments you have to sell the weight of the Transformers, in other moments you have to sell their athleticism," Benza says.

The key to making the Transformer characters interact well with the human actors and the sets was giving these mammoth machines a sense of weight and a fluidity of motion. "Most of what we had to achieve was possible, but not easily possible," Benza says. "A lot of the technology we used was in the early stages and had to be dramatically developed for us to use it in the film."

ILM animators employed a technique they refer to as "virtual background pipeline" to make sure that the animated characters had plenty of room to move in any given scene, whether they were flying, fighting or racing through an intersection. Virtual background pipeline starts by taking a large number of digital photographs of a scene or location using a tripod with a robotic head. ILM then used its custom-created Zeno software, as well as other different pieces of third-party software, to stitch the images together and re-create a seamless digital background. "These photos can also be used to create textured 3-D geometry, with a process called photomodeling—again, inside Zeno," Benza says.

Using the new seamless background combined with the textured 3-D geometry, artists at ILM, a subsidiary of Lucasfilm, Ltd., had the flexibility to alter camera moves that were filmed on location, or to create new ones. "Think of it as a projected image," Benza says. If Bay shot footage of an intersection, the animators would integrate computer imagery into Bay's background plate so they could better control the action of the animated characters moving through the scene. Virtual background pipeline was developed for The Island and was also utilized on Mission Impossible: 3, he says.

Peter Cullen Talks Transformers

Peter Cullen needs no introduction here. Superhero Hype! got a chance to sit down with the voice of Optimus Prime at a special presentation Paramount Home Entertainment held on Friday to show journalists the special features on the HD DVD of Michael Bay's Transformers that hits stores on Tuesday, October 16. Cullen met us at the studio and answered some questions about again voicing the icon:

Superhero Hype!: How often do you have people come up to you on the street and know you from Transformers?
Peter Cullen: Seldom, if ever. I'm not recognizable. That's one of the perks about being in voiceover because nobody sees your face and unless I purposely do the voice would I get a reaction with children… I like that anonymity. I've always kind of felt when I was a kid, I remember being disappointed at seeing the physical look of the person behind the voice because I always had my own imaginative in my brain of what that person looked like. When I met that person, it did even come close so I'm afraid that some child will have that same reaction to me. I don't push it.

SHH!: You only got to see the parts of the script you were in so what was it like to see the entire movie for the first time?
Cullen: I was at the premiere. I've never been to one really before. I'd been to "Winnie the Pooh" premiere once. We walked down the pink carpet. This was a blue carpet. I was kind of sucked into the energy and the nervousness. Finally when the movie came on, I wasn't I a relaxed state at al by any means surrounded by other major well known celebrities. I was never really comfortable through the whole thing. I made a point to see it again. I got a whole lot more out of it by being in a relaxed state and I had a better objective. So, my second time around I thought it was fantastic. I can't remember ever having been through a movie and seeing it again saying, ‘I don't remember seeing that.' It was overwhelming and loud.

SHH!: Did they do anything to your voice to enhance it?
Cullen: Yes, I think they did. I had a question about that early on with Michael Bay. I was just curious. I wasn't going to object in any way. It was their film, but I just wanted to know if they were going to make my voice as recognizable as it was on the original series. And he said, "don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. We're going to do something to justify it's size relative to the actors on screen." If he's a 40 foot high mechanical robot and Shia LaBeouf is less than his knee cap or whatever it is, he had to justify the sound without losing the character and without losing the original nuances that we had developed back in '84.

SHH!: What was Michael Bay like as a director?
Cullen: He was wonderful. He's an exciting man to work for and even if you didn't know anything about him, he has a presence. It's a strong presence and that presence alone is enough to energize you. Having known a little more about him than some other directors that you've never worked with before, he was generous, he was helpful, he was production in the sense that he could find a way to get things out of me that I appreciated, he made me extremely relaxed. I was very privileged because I can't imagine accomplishing the things that he's accomplished by just in scope alone in size. I would look at that and say, "that's insurmountable." I have to admire him for that because I'm in awe of that. "How does he do that?" Then you see him in action and you understand why. That brain is going all the time like the Energizer. It was a privilege and it was a pleasure. It was always a joy.

SHH!: What were you initial thoughts when Optimus Prime died in the "Transformers" movie and did anyone ask you to come back and play the character in the other shows over the years?
Cullen: Well the first part of that question, I was stunned. I was really disappointed more than anything else and I've said this before. I'm a day labor and I do my chores, as many jobs as I can. To see you're getting killed off, all you see is car payments going off. You don't think about it. You go off to the next job. When they did bring me back on two separate occasions it was because of fan base and parental uproar. I heard a story that some kid was not coming out of his closet, his room. He was so devastated, he wasn't coming out. There was a few. I wasn't aware and when I went in to do those shows, I wasn't aware as to why they were bringing me back. We never got fan mail. We didn't have a barometer to judge this thing on. It was just a job.

SHH!: Did they ever ask you to join the series that took place before the movie?
Cullen: No. It's funny. I wasn't aware of any of that popularity the Transformers had created until I went to my first convention back in Rochester, New York in '98 maybe or '99. That's when I found out. My daughter is the one who said, "dad you've got to go. You have to go." I said, "why Claire why?" She said "the kids in my class said, 'your dad is Optimus Prime' and they go nuts." I said, "you're kidding?" She said, "no, you've got to go." So I went. I was really surprised. I was sitting down in front of 3-400 people and they started applauding. It startled me. It really did.

SHH!: I understand you based the character on a family member?
Cullen: It was my brother Larry. We're very close. He's like my best friend. We're 13 months apart. It's quite a serious story how I came about. I was impersonating my brother Larry. He served in the Marine Corps and was in Vietnam. [He was] a purple heart recipient, a bronze star recipient. When he came home there was a significant change in him and that's where I got the qualities that I have applied to Optimus. His voice being the first thing. (in his Optimus Prime voice) "Peter cut it out." So we always laugh.

SHH!: Do you feel a sense of possessiveness with your characters like Optimus?
Cullen: I would say that if you do a character long enough, you do develop a sense of possession to it because it does become a part of you and you have an awareness of the popularity and how it's affected people. In this general case with Optimus, I am personally attached that way, but I will never allow myself to get so personally attached to something that I'll be injured the way I was hurt when I was replaced. It's hard enough to justify your day laborer attitude without being stomped on all the time. But that's life and I just avoid those areas where I can be terribly disappointed and that's part of it. I just move on. As far as some of the other characters I've done, I hope to never have to go back to them again. Some of them.

SHH!: You've said before you had to audition for the role. What did that audition consist of?
Cullen: Reading the character. Letting him hear it. He's directing a major motion picture, there's a lot at stake. I admire and respect that this guy is doing his job. He wasn't about to risk anybody's money so we played by the rules.

SHH!: Do you know when production for the second film is supposed to start?
Cullen: No, I have no idea. I hope the writer's strike doesn't affect the ongoing plans. It affects everyone.

We learned a few interesting things about the HD DVD that you can look forward to. The first disc will not only have the feature film, but a funny commentary by Michael Bay which includes him talking about not liking Shia LaBeouf's "nappy hair" and how he couldn't cut it because LaBeouf was still filming "Disturbia" There's funny factoids about the production and Transformers themselves. Viewers can watch picture-in picture b-roll and video with Bay, Steven Spielberg and other filmmakers. On disc two, fans can zoom in and get a 360 degree view of the robots. Using the HD DVD player, viewers will be able to update information and material on the film and the actors when new details are available.

Writers for Transformers 2 Confirms!

Last week it was revealed that writers Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Ehren Kruger were in negotiations for the sequel to the Transformers: The Movie. The Los Angeles Times now confirms that all three have signed on in a deal that may end up paying $8 million! The article also mentions that Michael Bay has already begun to pull together digital pre-visualizations for Transformer designs not used in the first film.

DreamWorks' willingness to agree to a combined team of A-listers, especially at such lofty rates, speaks to the studio's faith in the writers' ability to deliver (it also, one insider notes, effectively discourages the studio from spending more money to hire someone to rewrite their work).

New Knight Rider Series Inspired by Transformers

Every has probably a new Knight Rider TV series with a Transforming/Morphing KITT!

Variety reports that NBC has hired 'Mr and Mrs Smith' and 'The Bourne Identity' director Doug Liman to produce a 'Transformers'-inspired reworking of the 1980s series about the crusading Michael Knight and his computerised car KITT.

KITT could shift shapes in the new series, which could also see battles involving 'evil' cars.

Paramount Sets Transformers 2 Release Date

Despite a recent comment from Transformers director Michael Bay that the studio hasn't been going full speed ahead on a sequel because of the possible strike next year, Paramount Pictures has now set a June 26, 2009 release date for Transformers 2. It is unclear who all will return for the sequel, as far as crew and cast members. Hopefully we'll know more soon.

Transformers 2 Scheduled For Summer 2009 Release

Descriptions scenes IMAX of Transformers

From TFW2005.com forums a description of the two minutes of scenes added to the IMAX release of Transformers, does not include new CGI or Transformer elements.

I just got back from an advanced screening of the Imax Transformers.
We still do not know the fate of Barricade We do not see any new footage of any battles
First additional Scene is Sam picking up his friend who climbed the tree in the park. He makes fun of sam's car about being yellow.
Second additional scene is at the police station when sam gets arrested and they make him watch a video about what drugs do to your brain. The video is amusing but nothing great.
Third additional scene has the agent from Section 7 makes Sam take a test to see if he is lying inside the van by making him look into a device to see his pupils dialate.
Fourth additional scene is where the sector 7 agent tells the group about a room where he likes to meditate in (the part before they see the all spark cube)
Fifth additional scene is where one of the army guys goes into a pawn shop and tries to pawn his watch to get the shortwave radios
There may have been something new in the credits but I didnt think about checking until I left.

Bonecrusher in CNN

CNN Headline News ran a story about how the vehicle that was the alt mode for Bonecrusher is used to save lives by protecting soldiers looking for mines. The article used the toy version to demostrate how that works. Ironically, the arm on the toy is inaccurate as Bay has the arm extended to improve the visuals.

IMAX and the DVD Transformers

I saw the IMAX print and it is awesome! It is the future of cinema to see movies in this format. I'm going to see Tranformers one last time and get ready to gear up for Transformers 2. I added two minutes of stuff for IMAX that will never make into any DVD's. There will never be an extended edition.

About the DVD. I like the two disc set. I has all the extras that the others don't have. It is the definitive edition of Transformers. It really breaks down how we made the movie.

Anyway hope you like the IMAX print!

According to studio estimates, "Transformers" pulled in $1.18 Million for the weekend to top out at $308.6 Million in domestic box office receipts. That was just enough to climb over the $307.8 Million for "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." The second-highest grossing movie for the year is "Shrek the Third" at $321 Million.

Don Murphy: Possible Strikes in Hollywood to Delay Transformers Sequel?

Rottentomatoes.com recently sat down with Don Murphy, the producer of this summer's Transformers Movie, and briefly discussed the possibility of a sequel to the film.

In the interview, Murphy says that a sequel would probably be delayed due to possible upcoming guild strikes involving actors and writers and that he doubts that they will have time to make much progress on the sequel before the screen actor's guild and the writer's guild strike next year.

Optimus Prime Protoform

Finished up a new one... Optimus Prime in Protoform! This was a real stinker of a figure to start with... well, sort of. Cool figure, but bad factory paint, and kinda goofy transformation (the comet looks a little cartoony, not like in the movie.)

I saw the diamond in the rough though with the robot... so I gave him the "fill in the gaps" treatment, filling and sculpting and then sanding all the screw holes, so he was more complete and neat. Then I did multiple layers of paint on him... base coat of a metallic black, then drybrushed layers of Oily Steel then a custom mixed metallic light blue (very subtle.) I think he came out looking a lot more organic and protoform-ish.

While technically, he still transforms... I don't know why you'd ever want to... the robot form is much cooler...

Transformers to be released on standard definition DVD and HD-DVD only

It appears that Transformers will be released on on regular DVD & HD-DVD only and not Blu-Ray.

Paramount/Dreamworks has decided to drop it's support for Blu-Ray. That means you must either own a Toshiba HD-DVD player or have the HD-DVD add-on for the xBox 360 to view Transformers in HD

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. and DreamWorks Animation SKG , each announced today that they will exclusively support the next-generation HD DVD format on a worldwide basis. The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

The companies each said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs. Paramount Home Entertainment will launch its exclusive HD DVD program with the release of the blockbuster comedy hit "Blades of Glory" on August 28th and follow with two of the biggest grossing movies of the year "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third". These three titles alone represent more than $1.5 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide.

Transformers Movie Opened Japan

The movie opened on the 4th of August in Japan and, although the plot was no suprise thanks to some posters at tformers and tfans, there was plenty of action to keep people happy.

There hasn't been a lot of advertising for Bay's creation over here in the land of the rising sun. with minimal TV commercials and train interior posters. There also hasn't been a lot of merchandise for sale at the cinema, compared to the huge amounts still for sale from movies such as Spiderman 3, Harry Potter and Pirates 3.

Meanwhile, in the cinema itself (Funabashi Lallaport TOHO Cinema) there was little or no cut-outs OR posters of the movie.

Optimus Prime PC Case

By Extreme Tech, Congratulations to 36-year-old John Mangus from Pennsylvania for crafting the Optimus Prime PC case mod. This Transformer actually does transform, and stands 6'10" tall.

"This Optimus Prime PC mod is made out of aluminum from ranges of 14 ga to 1/4" material and formed and tig welded. It stands 6'10" tall while in transport mode. When I was designing this PC I wanted it to transform in some way or another. It is a Transfomer, what kind would it be if it did not transform. So, I made it transform into a much smaller desktop form. The hands are from casts I made from my own hands. I thought it would be cool to have something of me built into the mod. I used a slideout motherboard design for the MB mounting and external PSU mounted in a custom enclosure mounted on the back. It also has a 7" LCD sreen mounted in the waist to watch movies or such. I made the Autobot Matix center out of a solid peice of brass then milled it on my lathe to accept a 7" blue plasma disk and mounted on a 1/4" aluminum frame and polished it to a mirror shine.

For cooling, I used 2 120mm fans on the top of the chest and angled them to blow directly into the GPUs and CPU. It also has a 80 mm fan mounted on the backplane of the MB tray.

When I decided to paint it, I wanted to use Heavy truck colors on it. I decided to use Peterbuilt red and Freightliner blue and silver. After applying the color I shot 1 intercoat of clear with brillant fire red metalflake on the red and colbalt blue on the blue for effect. I then applied 5 coats of clear. I then sanded the entire PC done with 200 grit sand paper and buff it back to shine.

TRANSFORMERS score "coming out soon"!

Some great news to report from the effort to see a Transformers orchestral score CD be made available!

First, the petition showing support for Steve Jablonsky's Transformers score has gone from 438 signatures on Monday afternoon, to 787 right now on Wednesday evening. I realize that some are saying that "online petitions don't work" but all the same, this is a pretty strong barometer of how much demand there is to see this album released.

The second bit of news is even more heartening. I sent an e-mail to Chandra Cogburn, who was one of the composers who worked on Transformers. I told her that the work she and the others did on this score was amazing and that there is a very large demand for an album of it. This is what Miss Cogburn said when she wrote back:

Hello Chris,
There will be an album of Transformers score coming out soon. I do not know the details, as I am not working on it. Thanks so much for appreciating the music, and all our hard work!

This is also what Chris Barry was told this week when he also asked about a Transformers score.

My gut feeling is that we are going to see this score released, and probably before the DVD of Transformers comes out around late fall. I can only assume that once the DVD is out that there will be an even larger demand for this score.

The huge visual effects movie Transformers racked up the biggest July 4th single-day gross in boxoffice history. We speak to director Michael Bay and, for a something different, guest writer Robin Rowe looks in depth at the editing of the megahit blockbuster.

The huge visual effects movie Transformers racked up the biggest July 4th single-day gross in box office history, $26 million, beating the $22 million of Spider-Man 2 in 2004. By the end of the week Transformers stood at a whopping $153 million.

The furious cutting in the first few minutes of the film, from the huge alien robot attack on an American base in Qatar to Sam’s everyday life in suburbia, keeps the story pumping. Unlike Spider-Man 3, there’s no slowing down to have a Peter Parker character moping over breaking up with Mary Jane. Transformers is constant trills. The rapid MTV-style of cutting is just what everyone expects from a movie directed by Michael Bay.

Some of the most important actors in any giant robots film are, of course, the giant robots. The alien robots hide in plain sight by transforming themselves into ordinary-looking machines. The conversion process, from cars and planes to bipod robots, is mesmerizing and convincing. Director Michael Bay kept throwing the robots back to ILM demanding they look more real. He wanted the robots absolutely photo-realistic. The robots look amazing, whether flying through the air, burrowing through the sand, or running down the highway. While the robots had to be created digitally, Bay prefers using real tanks and airplanes over faking it using blue screen visual effects. The military gear is expensive and there’s lots of it, lots more than Apocalypse Now. It’s the biggest military coordination with a motion picture ever.

Producer Steven Spielberg, together with DreamWorks SKG and Paramount Pictures, acquired the rights to Transformers in 2004. In 2005, Paramount Pictures acquired DreamWorks SKG for $1.6B. The genesis of Transformers was a line of toys from Hasbro and a successful television cartoon series in the 1980s.

The film was shot anamorphic on film in 83 days of principal photography, not counting a few days of pick-ups. Some plate shots used 8-perf VistaVision. Editorial started around May 22, 2006, and principal photography ended October 4, 2006. The scale of the Transformers editing process is enormous, with three credited editors and two additional editors.

Editing with Michael Bay
Director Michael Bay is very hands-on, with a shared project with an “Experimental Cuts” bin open on a community Avid for use working with him. “I don’t know how to push buttons to make my own edit”, says Bay. “I’ll never learn to make my own edits because I don’t want to go there.”

Editor Paul Rubell notes that Transformers is true to Michael Bay's style. “Lots of action, lots of characters, lots of improvised humor, lots of visual effects, and lots of running time in the first cut”. Editor Glen Scantlebury adds, “It takes a lot of hammers to beat Michael Bay's images into submission.” DreamWorks production head Adam Goodman says, “The massive scale of Transformers demanded editors with the experience and skills necessary to weave intense action, complex visual effects, and well-timed humor into a compelling story”.

Scantlebury has worked ten and a half months editing by the time they finish. “Alternative Edits?”, says Scantlebury. “What else would we be doing for ten months?!!” Rubell adds, “Sometimes it seems we do nothing but prepare alternate edits”. Scantlebury says, “Michael is in there every day pulling his selects by himself on ‘his Avid’ and slugging it out with us”. Bay says, “I like to see editors do their own thing first. The editor prepares his own cut. Then we’ll work on it for an hour or two. I don’t like to see the assembly. I just want to see scenes. My action takes a lot of cutting. I’ll do 60 to 70 set-ups in a day. Everything is very much in my head. There’s all this film. What do we do with it?”

Pre-visualization
“There’s an intense need for pre-visualization in the mind's-eye of the editor”, notes Rubell. “Cutting scenes in which actors are interacting with characters who aren't there is a challenge. There are action scenes with things being blown up by characters who aren't there.”

The art department spent a year working on the "modernization" designs of the robots, the sets for the film and concept art for the visual effects. Concept art and design development continued through the shoot and well into post-production. Scantlebury says, “Steve Yamamoto and Rob Dressel did great pre-visualations for Michael before he shot, and we'd use them to help us figure out what the hell was going on when the plate shots arrived for a VFX scene.” To get the timing right, Steve Yamamoto came back to pri-vis his animations on top of a couple of the most complicated live action plate shots, so the editors could get the timing right before turning them over to ILM, .

Michael Bay assembled his own team of independent animatics artists during pre-production. They designed many of the hero scenes and served as a guide to us for preparation and during the shoot. In the end, some shots follow the animatics very closely and some are entirely developed from spontaneous ideas on set and during post-production.

The Tools
Transformers uses six Meridian Avids on Unity with about 2 terabytes of storage. A Nitris is used for all screenings including their preview. There are three main edit rooms, a fourth system in a closet, the assistants have two systems, and director Michael Bay has one. There’s a Media Net hook-up used for daily transmissions between ILM and Bay.

“For 3d modeling ILM used mostly Maya, 3ds Max, Zeno and zBrush,” says Farrar. “For lighting and rendering we use Zeno with RenderMan and Mental Ray. For compositing it's all Shake along with our Sabre systems, and editing uses Avids.”
Five EditorsTransformers has three main title editors: Rubell, Scantlebury and Muldoon; two additional editors: John Murray and Todd Miller, plus an associate editor: Ken Blackwell. To have so many editors on a film may sound like the casual sex of editing, but there’s method to the madness. All the editors had worked with Bay in the past and have extensive visual effects experience. “There’s 1.2M feet of film,” notes Bay. “Speed-wise, it’s important to have an editing team to bounce ideas. A lot of times we look at it together. With an effects film you have to do ‘turnovers’ [given to ILM by first assistant Calvin Wimmer] that cost $100k per shot. You have to cull through footage fast. The only way you can do that is with multiple editors.”

There’s been a trend of assigning one editor to handle the visual effects side when editing big effects films. Superman Returns and Charlotte’s Web are some recent movies with two editors. “At any given time, there have been two editors on Transformers”, notes Rubell. “But, five editors have worked on the film.” Scantlebury says, “Michael often picked which editor he wanted to start a scene, but by the end Paul, Tom and I had contributed to almost every scene.”

Editing Decisions
“I watched the first episode of the [1984] TV series just to get a flavor”, says Rubell. “I didn't want to be influenced beyond that. None of the editors are fan-boys, so we were often taken to the Bay woodshed for cutting out some important reference to the original series. But, we were able to bring a more mainstream perspective to the story.” Muldoon says, “The movie is so much bigger that nothing from before in the TV show applies. The movie is huge.” Scantlebury says, “I didn’t look at anything from prior Transformers because nothing can help you
cut a Michael Bay movie.”

Rubell says his biggest inspiration for editing Transformers is…Citizen Kane. “The point is, good editing is good editing regardless of genre”, says Rubell. “Is the rhythm organic? Do the characters live? Are the story points being made? Is there subtext, and if not, can we create it? There's no such thing as a best take. There's a best speech, or a best line, or a best word, or syllable, or look, or turn. It would be nice if actor performance could always be the sole criterion. What's the other actor doing? What's the camera doing? What's the focus-puller doing? What's the weather doing?” Scantlebury says, “I select the edit based on best performances always…if it's in focus and you can cram a robot in there somewhere”.

Muldoon started by assembling a full-length guide cut using animatics. In the early stages of picture editing, the animatics were incorporated into the sequences with temp dialogue, music and sound effects. As plates were shot, the animatics were gradually replaced. At first, with no other guide and no time for feedback from Bay, the editors stuck as closely as possible to the storyboards. Later any idea was fair game. What was shot on set did not necessarily conform to what was pre-visualized. What was a 30-second animatic may become a 2-minute scene.

“Armageddon had a lot of visual effects as well”, says Muldoon . “But, I don’t think I’ve done a movie with so many effects. Scantlebury had previously done the big visual effects movie Tomb Raider in 2001. “The challenge with Transformers is trying to pick plate shots and imagine 3-D robots rummaging around,” says Scantlebury. “The robots have their own comic timing to go with the actors’ comic timing, an evolving interaction through animation stages down to the last ADR session.”

Dailies
Dailies were delivered to the cutting room digitized. The negative was transferred to D5 tape and down-converted to Digibeta. Audio was delivered as files, imported and synched in the Avid. The Digibeta tapes were recycled. The D5 tapes were later used for the Nitris. All media was backed up on Firewire drives. There were no traditional dailies screenings on the big screen, something Scantlebury says he misses. Internally at ILM, dailies are reviewed each morning by the supervisor, then selects are made and reviewed with the director. “Once Michael gave the ok to release dailies to the studio”, says Blackwell, “we sent the telecine house an EDL and they assembled the dailies tapes for the studio.”

“In terms of Michael working with editors,” says Rubell, “he's a very busy guy.” The editors had to maximize their limited access to him. “Michael likes the fact that we're self-starters and tireless searchers for a better moment, a better juxtaposition, whatever,” says Rubell. “Eventually, he'll sit at the Avid and pull selects for a given sequence, which invariably will revitalize it. He knows everything he shot, way better than we do. He has an artist's eye and a great sense of humor. So when we've got him, we hang in and just try to keep up with him.”

What’s a typical day? “Bay would call in the morning,” says Muldoon. He got to see Spielberg a few times for input. “Steven and Michael had already talked about it”, says Muldoon. “Steven would talk about one reel. Towards the end we talked about whole movie. Obviously, you always select edit on performance. Sometime you can choose on action. Shia is really great on acting. We do a lot of alternative edits just because we can, and sort out the best way to integrate. We have the animatic, but sometimes the actors are ad libbing. You end up with different scenes and different moments. Bay doesn’t usually do things in one take, but we used one take on the Masked scene because Michael said, ‘I want to hold on shots and really show the Transformers’.”

“Michael is a final-cut director and as such, he remains firmly in control,” says Rubell. “Having said that, he loves to entertain ideas from every quarter.

The Associate Editor
“Ken Blackwell received the controversial ‘associate editor’ credit as a way of acknowledging his creative contributions as picture editor, visual effects editor, music editor, assistant editor, and technical guru”, says Rubell. “Ken is a Zen master on After Effects”, notes Scantlebury, “and may even have a shot or two in the movie.”

“Paul and I were finishing Miami Vice when Transformers started shooting”, says Blackwell. “I started at the end of July once we were finished with Miami Vice, and Paul started a month later. I have an After Effects station, which was used to create hundreds of temp comps for screenings and editing. We export TIFF sequence files of any elements we need from the Nitris [in high definition and kept up to date by assistant Adam Kimmerlin] and import them into After Effects. This is an inexpensive way to get immediate results for ideas that come up in the editing room. You can show the director immediate results of an idea. It has saved us a lot of time over the years and helped sell ideas.”

The Visual Effects
There are about 630 visual effects shots in the film. There are 430 executed at ILM, 91 at Digital Domain, 70 at the Asylum and the rest are 2D clean up and fixes done by CO3, ISolve and Ken Blackwell. Technical advancements were made in environments, lighting, and simulation of physical effects and integration of CG characters in a real environment.

“ILM did the bulk of the 3-D robots,” notes Scantlebury. “Incredible work, given the pressure of turning in shots up to the last minute…hold on…we just ordered two more 3-D shots three weeks before final delivery. Digital Domain picked up the rest, including turning a soft-drink machine into a crazed aluminum
can shooting Robot.”

“Overall, the most challenging shot is OH020 which is a 360 degree descending camera move on Optimus that rotating around to reveal all four Autobots transforming in an alley”, says ILM visual effects supervisor Scott Farrar. “The shot was filmed in two separate camera moves from two separate rigs: a Russian arm mounted to a camera car and a 50-foot Technocrane. The plates were combined and blended. The 768-frame-long shot moves from an overhead medium close up on Optimus finishing his transformation, into an extreme close up of all the moving parts, then widening out to reveal our hero talent. Shia and Megan watch all four robots individually transform with their own unique style.”

Challenges in 5.1 Music Editing
Quicktimes for the sound and music department were output via a firewire connection from a DVCAM deck into Final Cut Pro. “At a certain point we were called upon to screen the movie repeatedly and without notice, with a 5.1 soundtrack,” says Rubell. “We had a 5.1 temp but were making complicated picture changes around the clock. There was no time to get back to the stage to update the tracks. So I conceived of a way to make changes and screen 5.1 out of the Avid. We mixed down the 24-track stems into their respective left, center, right, surround, and low-frequency families. We then group-clipped the individual stems with their mixdowns. We edited with the mixdowns, and when it came time to screen, we expanded back to 5.1 by switching the grouped mixdowns back to their component stems. We then mixed the stems down into a 5.1 configuration and exported that to the Nitris. It worked flawlessly, except that after a few weeks of endless group-clip switching my crew threatened to kill me. I was forced to shelve the system until Avid comes up with a way to globally switch, from mark-in to mark-out, the clips on a given audio track.”

Conclusion
“There’s no one editor who’s good at cutting everything,” says Michael Bay. “Paul is the uber story editor. Glen cuts the best action. Tom is the best at getting the humor timing.” DreamWorks production head Adam Goodman says, “There’s no better fit for the task than editors Paul Rubell, Glen Scantlebury and Tom Muldoon.”

Next for Paul Rubell is Tonight, He Comes, the story of a depressed super-hero who's hitting the bottle and flying into buildings (starring Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman). Tom Muldoon stays busy editing commercials at his post-production house NOMAD. Glen Scantlebury says next for him is “a vacation”.

Our world will be transformed on July 4 when aliens make Earth their final battleground in Transformers. Asked if there’s anything about Transformers that could forever change how future films are made, editor Glenn Scantlebury said, “If an Avid machine transforms into a robot editor, we're all in trouble”.

Interview wth Michael Bay
To get the inside story on editing Transformers, we we able talk directly with director Michael Bay, the three main title editors Paul Rubell (ACE), Glen Scantlebury and Tom Muldoon, associate editor Ken Blackwell, and ILM visual effects supervisor Scott Farrar in Los Angeles.

fxg: Why are your movies so successful?

MB:My grandfather said the only way to make money is to sell to middle America. He was in the jeans business, a stone washer. Armageddon to me is a comedy, an average Joe saving the world. A lot of my movies deal with heroism or becoming a hero.

fxg: Steven Spielberg says you’re the perfect director for Transformers. What does he mean by that?

MB:I have a visual sensibility. Steven has said I’m one of the better shooters out there, that I’ve got the best eye in Hollywood. It’s amazing to sit in a room with Steven Spielberg and get to say, let’s talk about this scene or that scene. I like bouncing ideas off him. In the edit room, Spielberg is slapping me on the leg. Why is he doing that? Transformers brings out the kid in everyone.

fxg: Spielberg was working on Transformers before Paramount acquired DreamWorks. When did you come onboard?

MB:Three weeks after The Island. Steven Spielberg called. I said, I don’t know…

fxg: Steven Spielberg calls, and you say, I don’t know?

MB:I’ve been offered a lot of action movies. I wasn’t a fan of Transformers, wasn’t the right age to have been caught up in it. Hasbro sent me through Transformers school to learn all the characters and stories. I met with the writers. They didn’t want to show me the first script. We kind of threw that out. It was too kiddie. I said it would have to be cool for teenagers and fun for adults. Spielberg said it the best: "It’s about a boy buying his first car…that turns out to be an alien robot." That’s what sold me.

fxg: Why do critics give you a hard time?

MB:I asked a well-known critic over lunch, why do I get so much shit? He said, "You made too much success too early. We build them up to tear them down. And, we got bored going after Jerry Bruckheimer." Jerry taught me, don’t read the critics.

fxg: What’s a typical day for you?

MB:I have good days and bad days. I hang by the house, the pool. I read. I go to the office in Santa Monica where the edit bays are. Platinum Dunes is there.

fxg: How do you create your action scenes?

MB:The way I do action is the major beats. For a car chase, what are my big beats here? I use pre-viz. It’s put mostly in my head. I don’t storyboard the connecting pieces. I think storyboards are B.S. Crews don’t look at them anyway. I lay out a little road with Matchbox cars. You may think it’s silly. It’s important because you have stunt players, important they not crash into your event. I put the Matchbox cars on paper and say, right here at this cone you turn. For gunfights sometimes you can play act that on the set. You go to point B, C, then here, here. Storyboards take so many frames to show an action scene they don’t make sense. It’s better to walk it, talk it, or pre-viz.

fxg: Do you like to shoot?

MB:I like to camera operate. I won’t operate when the actors are acting. I need to see their eyes and too much is happening with the camera. I’ll put myself in dangerous positions to show my crew what we’re doing is actually safe. I started out wanting to be a DP…have a photo background. I can work with just about any DP.

fxg: Why did you become a director instead of a DP?

MB:I shot some student films. I’d ask, are you sure you want to do that shot? You don’t want that. Really…you don’t. This is a lame shot.

fxg: How do you decide what's the best lens and framing for a shot? Do you have favorite lenses and shots?

MB:Panavision designed some wide anamorphics for me, a 20, a 24. I used the 30 quite a bit, and the 35. They widened them out a bit, made them flatter for me. I was the first to shoot with the 3600 anamorphic, which was used in the desert for the planes flying in and for some of the car chase stuff.

I own the Arri 235 that I shot maybe a quarter of the movie with. It’s so small. It's a fun camera to shoot with. It’s been hot-wired for me. We build different rigs to do crazy hand-held stuff with it.

fxg: How do you get the best performance from actors?

MB:I work with actors quite a bit. I always hire improv actors. One of my strengths is creating funny on the set. I need actors who can roll with it. I create a tension on the set that you can see on the actors' faces.

fxg: How do you get the most of humor?

MB:I don’t know. Either you’ve got it, or you don’t. It’s all about timing. You need good sound to hear the joke. Pause for the laugh. Tom [editor Tom Muldoon] and I did the Got Milk campaign. You can’t rush it. I always like to work with actors who can ad lib. Nicholas Cage in The Rock, Shia LeBouf, Owen Wilson, Will Smith...they all have a great improv sense. Martin Lawrence. Comedy has a cadence. You must not break the cadence of a joke.

fxg: Why so many editors on Transformers?

MB:There’s 1.2 million feet of film. Speed-wise, it’s important to have an editing team to bounce ideas. Started with Tom Muldoon, then Paul Rubell became available, then Glen Scantlebury. There’s no one editor who’s good at cutting everything. Paul is the uber story editor. Glen cuts the best action. Tom is the best at getting the humor timing. A lot of times we look at it together. With an effects film you have to do ‘turnovers’ that cost $100k per shot. [That is, turnover scenes to ILM for visual effects.] You have to cull through footage fast. The only way you can do that is with multiple editors.

fxg: How do you like editors to work?

MB:My action takes a lot of cutting. I’ll do 60 to 70 setups in a day. Everything is very much in my head. There’s all this film. What do we do with it? I like to see editors do their own thing first. I have a low budget film company [Platinum Dunes] to help young filmmakers. The editor prepares his own cut. Then we’ll work on it for an hour or two. I don’t like to see the assembly. I just want to see scenes.

fxg: How hands-on are you as an editor?

MB:I don’t know how to push buttons to make my own edit. I will never learn to make my own edits because I don’t want to go there. I make my own selects.

fxg: What’s your advice for editors starting out who wants to edit for you or someone like you?

MB:A good way is to start is as an assistant. Roger Barton was an assistant, became third editor on Bad Boys. Jim May is another, working at Platinum Dunes. Along the way doing sides jobs. If I have a big show I let an assistant try it. Platinum Dunes does movies you’d never show your mother…Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, The Hitcher. [And, The Birds for 2009.]

fxg: What’s next?

MB:I want to get into the game business. I bought 500-employee Digital Domain. I’m totally immersed in it. Sometimes I’m a control freak beyond control freaks. I try to keep people in top game, something I learned under Jerry Bruckheimer. It’s who you surround yourself with. I’ve worked with people for years. Once people know your sensibility it’s very easy to work.

fxg: What’s happening with Nuke and Digital Domain?

MB:I bought The Foundry in England, too. We’re taking all our software there. They’ll hot-wire Nuke. It needs add-ons and stuff. I brought some guys over from ILM.

fxg:You hired away guys from ILM while they were doing the effects for your movie?

MB:One of the guys was running ILM and another was their head tech guy. They were still nice about doing my movie. They’ll always get some of my business. I don’t use one sole source.

fxg: In general, are movies as good as they used to be?

MB:Things are more real now, more photo real. Look at the 70s and the 80s. Visual effects opened up a whole new world. Maybe there’s over-saturation. We’ve almost seen everything. In the 70s, Steven Spielberg invented dinosaurs. Now he’s hitting me in the leg. Why? Because he’s never seen robots doing that before. It’s hard to tell a fresh story now.

fxg:Do you have a special personal project you’d like to do?

MB:I have a Pulp Fiction type of story called Pain and Gain, a little 35-day shoot if I could find the time. They keep giving me these big action features.

Transformers’ Art Director Alex Jaeger’s

The gears meshed perfectly when Alex Jaeger took the position of Art Director for the new film, Transformers. Take an education in automotive design and prototyping, add 12 years experience at ILM and a passion for anything made with a metal plate, and the fit is perfect to launch what is bound to be the next big franchise in film history. In spite of the impending success (and it’s not the first time), Jaeger is the most gracious and unpretentious of people who can still laugh at himself, and is a real pleasure to talk to.

Growing up in the small town of Clarion, Pennsylvania, Jaeger spent much of his time watching “really bad SciFi movies just to gleam what ideas they had; good ideas, just executed really poorly.” In high school Jaeger was known as the class artist, and his parents encouraged him to explore his talent. “My dad was a doctor growing up. I took a look at how long he went to school and said, ‘Eh, no thanks!’ Plus I didn’t want people’s lives to be at stake. If I mess up here, no one’s going to die… which I thought would save my hair, but apparently didn’t.”

After studying automotive design in Detroit for two years, he realized it just wasn’t all he had hoped for. That was when he learned about ILM and the FX industry, through Joe Johnston’s sketchbooks on ‘Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi,’ Syd Mead’s work on ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘2010,’ and the work of Ron Cobb. Jaeger transferred to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where he made up his own curriculum to have the skills needed to work at ILM, including prototyping, taking an idea from a sketch to a physical three-dimensional prototype.

According to Variety, Paramount and DreamWorks are claiming an estimated $8.8 million for Michael Bay's Transformers in its "preview screenings" in a number of theatres starting at 8pm last night. That's rougly 67% of what Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End made when it took a similar approach on Thursday May 24, before grossing just under $140 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend.
